Tigers v. Twins: Race for the division

The Tigers and Twins enter tonight's four game series with the Tigers clinging to a slim two-game lead in the Central.  Obviously, this could be the series that decides who makes the postseason, and it has all the makings of a classic end-of-the-season rumble in the D.  Both teams are pretty much limping into this series, too.  The Tigers are bringing only one batter that hits over .300 and a stop-gap pitching staff, while the Twins are coming in without Justin Morneau and Joe Crede, and who can tell what they will get out of Francisco Liriano.

I see each team having the edge in two games when you look at starting pithers:  Detroit has the advantage in games 1 and 2 as they have Porcello and Verlander starting, respectively.  If Porcello can give them a good start in game 1 and the Tigers get the win, they are virtually assured of at least a series split with the Ace pitching tomorrow.  After that, I have to give the edge on the back side of the series to the Twinkies.  Whenever Pavano faces the Tigers, they make him look like Roy Halladay's bigger, better brother.  It doesn't matter what approach they bring to the plate, as far as Detroit bats are concerned, Pavano is untouchable!  As far as game 4 goes, you never know what you'll get when you start Nate Robertson.

Hopefully for Tiger fans, the bats can warm up a bit and they can take 3 out of 4 and rest some arms before they have to face the Yankees.  If they tank, though, after coming into the series up 2 games, they don't deserve to make the playoffs anyway.  It should be an excellent series, though.

I'm a huge Tiger fan, but realistically, this is not the same caliber of team as the 84 .  Certainly, this pitching staff is probably better, with Verlander, Jackson and Porcello leading the way.  But the bats are just too inconsistent.  When you look at the Tigers, they have been playing .500 ball for about 2 months, and falling back to the crowd in the Central.  Too many poor hitting performances to win tight games, at least in my opinion.  Given last years debacle, I am very happy just to see the Tigers competing, and the celebration will be short lived if we win the division, with the looming as our first opponent.
